Anson Engine Museum in Cheshire

The Engine Museum in Anson is a place I wouldn't have really considered visiting at first glance I admit. I don't know the first thing about engines and I don't really think I can get my head around understanding them -- but Mike is incredibly mechanical minded so I knew we had to visit. Its quite a hard one to find, the winding country roads led us on quite a journey before we stumbled onto the driveway.

The museum has a very small cafĂ©, for essentials such as toast and coffee, which also houses the gift shop. The museum itself is £7 to enter for adults, but as its quite obvious where the proceeds go I didn't begrudge paying the entrance fee! Volunteers are the heroes who man the museum and look after the machines which still run here. When we arrived we just made it in time to see them starting some engines for their weekly running which was actually quite interesting to watch!

I couldn't begin to name the engines we saw. I know someone who could, but I honestly don't think I could translate it into words I understand to write on the blog! I have to confess however that watching the machine belts spin was more than a little mesmerising. The engines have been cleaned and lovingly cared for to an incredibly high standard, and the volunteers are happy to talk you through how each and every machine works -- its incredibly obvious everyone is passionate about what they do.

Aside from the engines and museums, there is a host of old retro and vintage items, signs and tools dotted around. These can all be touched (unless advised otherwise) and the museum really does encourage you to press buttons, pull levers and really get to grips with the replicas which have been donated from various different sources around the country.

There is something satisfying about watching machines and their tiny little component parts all coming together to work something which can be so massive in size it barely fits into a room. The noise when the engines are all rumbling away is incredible, and the smell of diesel is something that you become accustomed to quite quickly.

I'm going to leave you with a few of the photographs we took while exploring the museum - forgive the lack of commentary!

Would you believe me if I told you that the above photograph was actually a scale model replica? A few of them are dotted around, and they've been so lovingly constructed its a real treat to see them. Some are a little out of working order, but the work that has gone into them is still very obvious.

Sneakily shot through the glass when I ventured off to explore the cinema area. As you can see my phone was new at that point, and I was snapping away for my instagram as I've actually not had the phone to take pictures for instagram in a long long time so I did get a little giddy!

The cinema allows you to indulge in very old tapes of various tests that the engines have come through in their years. We watched one about tank tracks being used on farming vehicles - even through the subject matter lost me a little, it was lovely to see the old tapes and how even back then tests in muddy fields were all performed fully suited and booted!

I left the second photograph in so that a real perspective of the model can be given. Its actually a scale model of Poynton, the town where the museum is located -- and the details that it has will have you lost for days. We spotted a tiny model wedding happening with a full guestlist, a tiny herder taking his cows from one field to another -- even children playing in the yards of the houses in some cases.

Out in the yard, there are much bigger machines that wouldn't possibly fit into the buildings displayed. There are also parts from machines -- some bigger than me and me again!

While we were outside, a volunteer urged us to enter the building where the steam engine was located as it was due to start up. The building was filled with people all wanting to see the huge engine begin, and you could stand at various different points whether you wanted to look down over the engine or if you wanted to stand beside it. It was much quieter than I expected it to be!

Another area in the yard is dedicated to the old arts. Blacksmithing, woodworking and other artisanal crafts. I was fascinated by this, and could have been lost for days if I wasn't careful. Things like that always enchant me! There were tools laid everywhere and no matter where your eyes fell there was something to look at.

All in all, my day at the Anson Engine Museum was one incredibly well spent and it was a lesson learned for me to think I wouldn't be interested. I may not have a love of engines or mechanics, but it was such a fascinating place I could have wandered for hours and hours on end. Please stop by if you are in the local area and support such a wonderful, local little treasure! I promise you won't be disappointed!
