There is nothing more satisfying when you are really hungry than a huge plate of chips. The problem is that they come with a serving of guilt. It’s no secret that potato fries are not the healthiest of meals as they are laden with saturated fats. Nevertheless, they are so easy to make and go well with many other foods so it is hard to see how we could cut them out of our diet altogether.

If you are starting a makeover of your diet, chips and fizzy pop are the best places to start. Both can be replaced with highly nutritious and tasty alternatives that will do you good. Soon you will wonder what you saw in potato fries in the first place!

Snack on raw seasoned peppers

It helps you to keep your blood sugar level stable and prevents you feeling exhausted and craving carbs and sugar. Peppers make a perfect snack as they are crunchy, versatile and packed with essential nutrients.



Bell peppers are widely available and cheap and come in some great colors! However, they can be a little bland. They are an extremely versatile ingredient as their sweetness allows them to combine with a huge range of other flavors. Start off by cutting them into thin strips and they already look like fries! Now you can sprinkle them with salt and pepper or rub in a combination of spices. Paprika works well. Serve with a ranch or blue cheese dip.

Baked green beans and parmesan

Green beans are full of calcium, iron and phosphorous. Baking them allows them to retain a lot of that goodness and improves their flavor. It also makes them crispy which is a texture similar to potato fries. Before you pop them in the oven, toss them with some olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Once they are crispy, serve immediately with grated parmesan cheese.

Crispy carrot fries

As another root vegetable, carrots make a perfect alternative to potato fries. They have more flavor than potatoes and therefore don't need so much seasoning. Coat them well with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper, then bake them at 450°F for around 7 minutes. The oven needs to be very hot to ensure that they crisp up on the outside. A soggy baked carrot is not very appetizing! They taste surprisingly good dipped in tomato ketchup but you can use hummus as a healthy alternative.

Courgettes will introduce plenty of antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin A into your diet and make a great low-fat alternative to traditional fries. All you have to do is toss chopped zucchini sticks with olive oil, salt, and freshly ground black pepper, and bake at 425°F until crisp. Serve with a fresh tomato salsa or cooling yogurt dip.
